customer charged back credit card after 3 weeks, and after using the service?
Lisa K asked:
I own a business in Wisconsin, and recently had a customer charge back their credit card 3 weeks after using the service they paid for. I have 2 merchant accounts. One is a regular merchant account, the other is through paypal. I have been in business for 3 years and have had 4 chargebacks in this amount of time, which is very low considering how much volume we do. My regular merchant account fights chargebacks very good, and i have never lost with them. Paypal however is terrible at fighting them, as I have never won with them. My question is, can I simply run this person’s transaction on my regular merchant account, after they have done a chargeback on my paypal merchant account? Or will I get in trouble for running it again. This person still has merchandise from us, and used our service, yet has not returned anything after the chargeback. The reason I want to run this again on my regular merchant account is because if they do a chargebcak on that one, I know I will probably win.

I sell a lot of “virtual” goods online and paypal is by far the worst at processing charge backs. You basically dont have a chance. I would stop accepting them as a form of payment.
As far as charging it to another merchant account, I don’t think you can, legally.
Legally and ethically I wouldn’t do it.
If you want to collect your money file a claim in circuit court for small claims against this person and whether they show to pay or not you can put it on their credit and hurt them in the future.
NO. You cannot charge the credit card a second time. Running a transaction through your merchant account while the charge is in dispute is a violation of your merchant processing agreement and you subject you to being put on a terminated merchant file (TMF) list.
