Is it a crime if I accidently charged $1150 from another persons CREDIT CARD ACCOUNT?
Sweetness asked:
I’ve only purchased online 4 times for the purpose of ordering products etc, however for the 5th time I had come to work and decided to purchase a cell phone online which cost $1150.00. This time around I had forgotten my credit card at home so I had tried to remember my number by heart. The first attempt at entering my credit card details it had resulted to “Invalid Transaction” so I thought I’d try changing the last digit (without changing the expiry date and name) and the transaction was accepted??!!?. Now assuming that it was the “correct” number, to my surprise I checked my bank account and the money hadn’t been credited yet, a little strange but I had thought that because it was late at night that maybe it wouldn’t show through untill the morning so I wasn’t too concerned. Just before lunch time the next day I checked my account again to find out the money STILL had not been credited so immediately I knew something went wrong. I contacted the merchandiser straight away and informed them of what had happened. However as soon as I had gotten off the phone with them the courier man was knocking at the door and now the $1150 package is sitting with me??
I feel really bad and I feel like a criminal. The merchant is sending me return post bags and I will send it off ASAP however I am feeling really guilty that I have done this to someones account?? I’m just hoping to god that I don’t get charged for fraud? It purely a human error. Someone put me at ease?
And I had my name, expiry date correct AND ALSO the security number on the bank which is why I don’t understand why the payment STILL WENT THROUGH??? How can this happen??
And yes they sent the phone the very next day around lunch time and I am from New Zealand. They’ve posted me the return bags so as soon as I recieve them I will be sending it back asap.

If you accidentaly hit someone with your car and kill them you are still charged with manslaughter. So yes I believe you are still committing a crime.
I don’t think you need to feel as if you’re a criminal. It was an honest mistake and will be corrected, most likely at your expense as it was your mistake. However you need to be more careful in the future and always have your card with you and in your hand while punching in those numbers online.
Get an attorney, Sweetie. That is still a crime but you may have a chance to fix the matter if you get an attorney asap and discuss it with him/her.
look on the website and get the customer service number and call them explain what happened and have them charge your card and refund the money to the one you used instead
in the future if the card isnt in your hand dont make a purchase
you can and should be charged with fraud and grand larceny
this is not a human error you did this on purpose
you are an adult accept responsibility for your mistake
you never order anything without card in hand
There does not appear to be any fraud. You reported the incident to the merchant. You are returning the phone. It is up to the merchant to remove the charge from the other account, if it was charged.
To be a fraud, there has to be an intention to gain something without paying. Making a error in entering a number is not a crime.
You may have given them the correct number.
Some merchants do not charge a purchase immediately.
By the way your account would be debited or charged for a purchase. A credit occurs when you pay your bill or a charge is removed.
Umm yeah that is a crime.
Did you look to see if maybe your card number was what you put in it?
And if the person whoes number you did put in finds out you will most likely be in alot of shhitt.
Changing the last digit of a credit card isn’t going to work alone. You still have to put in name, card expiration date and the code on the back of the card. This is all done specifically so what you’re claiming happened can’t happen. So clearly you’re not telling us the whole story. From what I can gather, you stole someone’s card and cooked up this ridiculous excuse which a six year old wouldn’t buy. Really, people aren’t that stupid.
Well this is probably going to be the only time in my life that I agree with Rock firestorm! I guess some kind of a glitch is possible, but the story just seems……too far fetched. Sorry!
