How about an online store for anything that interests you? Clothes, accessories, books and what not?
Have you given thought to selling your service/s (you mentioned you were good at several things) to small scale businesses for you to save up for a bigger business? It can help.
One way is trade or sourcing.
Basically you help other people find the things you need. Maybe you contact companies in China or India that have products that they want to export. You find companies in the US that want to stock them in their stores.
No money down, just build up contacts.
You are in the US, so think about where your contacts are. Remember these days everyone wants to save some money.
Simple, easy, if you have buyers countries like China have the products.
Advertise in the local paper that you will build a website for a company or individual. Don’t expect 100.00 to go very far.
Join local networking groups in your area. Design some kickin’ business cards and start handing them out. Show some examples of sites that you’ve designed. Show people how your skills can help them sell more product and services. Do it cheaply at first, even on “spec”. Meaning they pay you only if they like it.
Besides design learn all you can about website optimization.
Network, network… its the best way to get your message out there without spending a lot of money.
